Belize, formerly known as British Honduras, is the only official English-speaking country in Central America and is the only country in Central America without a coastline on the Pacific Ocean. Belize was a British colony  for more than a century and was known as British Honduras until 1973. It became an independent nation in 1981. Belize is located at the Caribbean coast, nestled between Mexico City and Antigua Guatemala and offers an intriguing mix of tropical forests rich with wildlife, majestic 3,675 foot mountains, Maya temples, and amazing diving and fishing possibilities. The Caribbean coast is lined with a coral reef and some 450 islets and islands known locally as cayes (pronounced "keys"), forming the approximately 200 mile (322 km) long Belize Barrier Reef, the longest in the western hemisphere and the second longest in the world after the Great Barrier Reef.
